Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) today released the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8:
“This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court stood up for equality and justice. It reinforced that you cannot discriminate against Americans because of who they are or who they love. It is a great day for all Americans.
“I proudly fought against Texas’ Defense Against Marriage Act and constitutional amendment because legislating hate and discrimination is simply wrong. What two other people do with their lives has no bearing whatsoever on my marriage, just as my marriage has no bearing whatsoever on theirs. I still wish the people fighting so hard against marriage equality would put half as much effort into correcting some of the problems plaguing our state and nation instead of supporting divisive wedge issues that truly serve no purpose other than stoke the fires of discrimination. “
