(Austin, Texas)//State Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston), released the following statement regarding the Congressional Black Caucus’ and House Democrats’ walkout of the US House of Representatives vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress.
“I applaud the actions of the Congressional Black Caucus and House Democrats, because today’s contempt vote against Attorney General Eric Holder is not worthy of their participation. The vote is unprecedented, unnecessary and unwise. Partisan politics is one thing, but the continued use of government and the rule of law to score political points denigrates our democracy and further erodes support for Congress and institutions of government.
“The fact of the matter is that Attorney General Eric Holder and the Department of Justice consistently cooperated with the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s requests for information on “Fast and Furious. The Department turned over almost 8,000 documents–including all the documents that relate to the tactics in this investigation and the other flawed investigations that occurred in Arizona during the Bush Administration. The Attorney General also participated in a bicameral meeting in a good faith effort to satisfy the Committee’s information requests.
“Too many members of Congress are clearly beholden to the fever dreams of the most ridiculous far right conspiracy theorists and gun nuts. In the midst of an unemployment crisis, the House leadership seems to focus on witch hunts, political theater and abortion. They need to stop worrying about what’s good for their own primaries and start worrying about what’s good for the country.”
