Senator Rodney Ellis today released a statement regarding the University of Houston being designated a Tier One research institution, an important step toward ultimately reaching full Tier One Status
“This is a great day for the University of Houston and for education in the state of Texas. Receiving the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s Tier One research designation is a huge step toward becoming a full-fledged Tier One university.
“Texas currently has the same number of Tier One universities – three — as it did decades ago, despite our rapid growth and the evolving economic marketplace. Texas has become a leader in scientific research and technology, but our investment in our institutions has lagged far, far beyond the demand and need for world-class universities. Texas must dedicate more funding to higher education because, over the long-term, our state and our people reap benefits that far outweigh the initial investment.
“I congratulate the University and look forward to working with them this session and in the future to help them reach their eventual goal of becoming an official top-flight, Tier One university.”
